Not getting enough sleep?

Updated: Nov 30, 2019

I've had one of those weeks where I woke up at 3am on two different nights and couldn't get back to sleep. I'm thinking it's stress related. It can happen occasionally to anyone, but when it happens often it's important to find out why. Does this happen to you?

If you're getting up multiple times at night due to your bladder or unsettled stomach, then you're familiar with sleep deprivation. Eating meals to close to bedtime or overeating can lead to sleep troubles. Hormonal imbalances can also be contributing to sleep issues.

Ongoing sleep deprivation can lead to increased risk for heart or kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even strokes. Not to mention it will prevent your bladder and gut from healing.

The benefits of a good night sleep -

  • Sleep energizes us

  • Sleep restores and helps our bodies heal

  • Sleep helps with positive thinking

  • Sleep helps our brain assimilate new information

If you've ever wondered why you have a hard time losing weight, it could be due to lack of sleep. Cortisol level rises, which is the hormone associated with fat gain when you're body is sleep deprived. And, your body produces more Ghrelin and your brain wants more food.

6 Tips for better sleep:

* Caffeine takes five to six hours to wear off, drinking it earlier in the day is best.

* Allow 3 hours for your food to digest before bedtime.

* Limit tv and electronic devices two hours before bed. The screen light messes up melatonin production. I recommend Blue Blocker glasses, available on Amazon.

*Keep your bedroom at a cooler temperature

* Limit alcohol intake which can affect your REM cycle.

*If you have a lot on your mind, its helpful to do a "brain dump" in a journal or on paper coming up with solutions for anything bothering you. If you have any

unresolved issues or feel wired, this practice makes a difference.

When you're living with chronic digestive issues or bladder pain it can be hard to get a good night's sleep. If you're unable to sleep, then your body will not be able to heal.

There can be other underlying issues such as infections or parasites that lead to poor sleep. I offer a GI Map test which shows any pathogens, viruses, candida, parasites, hpylori and other gut bacteria issues which can be preventing you from a good night sleep.
